There are several things to consider when purchasing a new pitching machine for yourself or for your child. With so many machines on the market today the choice can be very confusing! Use common sense and these suggestions and you will pick a pitching machine that will give years of carefree service and reliability and is right for your individual needs.

Choose a top quality pitching machine that will give years of carefree, reliable service. A pitching machine that doesn't work properly or is inaccurate is worthless. Sometimes saving a few extra bucks cost you in the long run. There are however pitching machines on the market that are low cost, affordable, quality machines that will give years of carefree, reliable service. Be sure to consider weather you will use the machine for baseball, softball or both! Some machines will adjust so you can use either and some want. Some pitching machines will require additional or optional equipment such as extra legs if you intend on using them for both softball and baseball. Other machines have adjustable legs and will adjust for baseball or 11" and 12" softballs.

A quality pitching machine should have a warranty that stands behind it for several years, after all they are a fairly high dollar item. Warranties can range from a year to five years depending on the brand and model you choose. Always choose the machine with the longest warranty available in your price range because the machine will most likely use for several years. Also check to see if the warranty is transferable in the event you decide to sell the machine that is a good selling point.

Be sure to ask if the machine has a return policy in the event you are unhappy with it! Find out how long you have to return the machine for a refund. A return policy should be good for at least thirty days.

One thing that is important to most of us is the cost of the batting machine! Prices can range from a couple hundred dollars to over ten thousand dollars for professional models. It is important to check out a machine to see if it has the options that you need such as a good warranty, pitching speed, will it throw a verity of pitches such as fastballs, curveballs, knuckelballs, slow pitch, etc and the size and weight of the machine (If you don't get the options you need you will regret it later) then check the price. If it is to pricey move on to another model. Ask about shipping cost. Some companies try to make a profit off the shipping cost while others will actually pay for the shipping!

Some pitching machines are strictly to be used for batting practice while others have swivel action that allows you to use it for infield or outfield practice, grounders and pop-ups as well. If you need a machine that can be used for things other than batting practice be sure to ask the sales person what all the machine can be used for.

Look to the future. If you are purchasing the batting machine for someone that is 6 years old you don't need high speed or curveballs for several years to come. A straight pitch with a speed of 20 mph to 70 mph for later on will do. If you are purchasing a machine for someone that is 12 years old or older you may consider a machine that has speeds from 20 mph to over 100 mph and has the capability of throwing curveballs and other types of pitches. At that age they will be seeing those types of pitches in the near future.

Pitching machines are a great way to improve arm, back, shoulder and upper body batting strength, hand eye coordination and batting technique. They are also great when combined with batting cages to reduce ball recovery time.

There are light duty machines with good warranties however if you intend on using your pitching machine for heavy use such as team or multiple teams you should consider the purchase of a heavy duty multi purpose machine that has a verity of speeds and pitches and the longest warranty available. The best thing to do is not buy the light duty machine unless it will be used for an individual and used only a few times a year. They tend to wear out sooner and have less resale value. Often the manufacturer uses inferior materials on the lighter duty machines because there is a small profit margin. A good heavy duty pitching machine will give years of carefree, reliable service.

Very important! Always ask if parts are available for the pitching machine you are contemplating purchasing in the event you need them and how long will it take to receive the parts when you order them.
